History – The Subaru Story

The industry-leading technology found in our engines, generators and pumps can be attributed to decades of advanced engineering that started with our parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, in 1917.

1917

Fuji Heavy Industries begins with an aerospace focus at Nakajima Aircraft Laboratory in Japan. It grew into one of the largest aircraft manufacturers of its time in the Pacific Region and manufactured Japan’s first jet engine, the J0-1.

1953

The innovation that led Fuji to succeed in aerospace turned to land transportation when the first car was manufactured: the Subaru 1500.

1956

Having successfully manufactured engines for four decades, Fuji established a new division focused on general-purpose, air-cooled gasoline engines. The division was named Robin.
